The Fairford Branch – BR (W)
Built in two stages, the first from Yarnton to Witney in 1861 and the second to Fairford in 1872, the line was originally planned as a cross-country route from Oxford to Cheltenham but this was never fully realised. The line was bought out by the GWR in the 1890s and was a typical Great Western branch up until the war when multiple airfields were built along its route, the largest being RAF Brize Norton. The war brought many changes and expansions to the line, with additions of extra loops and platforms at stations. The line was eventually closed to all traffic and passengers as far as Witney in 1962, with final closure coming for goods to Witney in 1970. This route aims to capture the route at its peak in the early 1950s with all its various additions before the decline began to set in in the 1960s, and runs from Oxford to Fairford.
